Last week I had a very interesting discussion about the most important current topics for CIOs and IT managers. This highlighted the enormous range of topics that IT managers currently have to deal with – an almost impossible task.
Even if prioritization is almost impossible and always very subjective, I would recommend the following five topics to every CIO:
1. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹: take care of your employees. Make sure that people enjoy working for you and that a culture of appreciation and trust is created. Every employee who leaves your team takes know-how with them that you can only rebuild with difficulty.
2. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗞𝗜: we have to face the fact that generative AI is being used. And in a big way. This often happens without the knowledge of superiors and in an uncontrolled and unreflected environment. You can’t prevent Generative AI, so start integrating it. Create awareness, establish guidelines and ensure that your Gen AI landscape matches your sensitive company data.
3. 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻: the transfer of knowledge and the acquisition of knowledge are business-critical elements. Both in terms of breadth and depth. Make your company know-how accessible so that you can benefit from the possibilities of knowledge management and AI.
4. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: the better your systems talk to each other and the more compatible your data is, the better you can react to future requirements. Use standards wherever possible, do your “homework” and prepare your landscape for future developments.
5. 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀: there are news and trends almost every week. It is very difficult to maintain an overview. Remember: it is not necessary to jump on every trend immediately. Sustainable, long-term considerations are usually more important for corporate IT than short-term knee-jerk actions. Set up a team to keep an eye on trends and integrate them into your long-term strategy if necessary.
I firmly believe that if you take these five points to heart, you can steer your team / your company sustainably and safely through these turbulent IT times … and thus also prepare yourself for the three million other priorities.
