May 8 in the US Senate: Senator Cruz (Chairman) and Sam Altman (Open AI) describe their perspective on AI. I can only recommend this to everyone:
We have to face the facts that the US is pursuing a clear geopolitical strategy when it comes to AI, declaring China the enemy and using the EU as a negative example.
I have two quotes here that should give you food for thought:
AI is undoubtedly THE key technology of the 21st century. Cruz places this in the direct context of the economy and national security. From this he deduces that America MUST beat China in this field. This is followed by some ranting about Biden, the EU with its regulation, etc. But then, after 5:27 minutes, comes a sentence that I had to hear several times and that still leaves me speechless (in response to the question of whether regulation, rules and โwatchdogsโ are needed):
In good German: โlet the AI people do their thing as if they didn’t know what they were doing. How can you accuse these people of not acting responsibly – but then again…
They will try out whatever is technically feasible and the more unregulated the environment, the more blatant and dangerous the results will be. They will do what is possible and not what is politically / ethically / socially sensible and safe.
Just a year ago, Sam Altman said on this very subject: โ… That’s right! However, there is not much left of it.
However, another aspect is increasingly taking center stage:
This means that at some point it will no longer be the technology that makes the difference, but who can operate the necessary infrastructure the fastest and most scalable. That is also true.
But what does that mean for us? Are we really just spectators in this global race?
I fear that the world will be able to do little to counter the ruthlessness with which the USA is staking out its own claims here. The winner takes it all.
